Subject Distribution Analysis of Hacettepe Addressed Publications

As it is known, Hacettepe University was announced as a research university on September 26, 2017 within the scope of the "Specialization and Mission Differentiation Project" by the Council of Higher Education. Making scientific publications in internationally respected sources is an important feature that defines research universities. Hacettepe University ranks first among all state and foundation universities in our country in terms of the number of research articles, which is the most important output of scientific research. Considering the Web of Science database, the number of publications of our university has increased regularly over the years, reaching the level of 3700+ per year as of 2021. Hacettepe University has made a significant contribution to science at the national and universal level with a total of 40,000+ research articles published since its establishment.

This study was carried out to analyze and evaluate the subject distribution of the publications from Hacettepe University, covering the 3-year period before it was announced as a research university (2015-2017) and the next 3-year period (2018-2020).

Within the scope of the research, Web of Science database was used to obtain the bibliographic data of the publications addressed to Hacettepe University. The Global Institutional Profiles Project (GIPP) scheme, which is based on the combination of Web of Science subject categories and collects these subject categories in six disciplines, and also covers interdisciplinary overlaps, was used in classifying the publications from Hacettepe University according to subject categories. Accordingly, the publications addressed to Hacettepe University are classified according to the following scientific fields;

    Arts & Humanities
    Clinical, Pre-clinical & Health
    Life Sciences

    Social Sciences
    Engineering and Technology

Quarterly slices of journals scanned by Web of Science were included as an additional dimension in the analysis of publications from Hacettepe University. For this, journal quarterly data presented by Incites Journal Citation Reports were taken into account.

Thematic distribution functions of data editing and bibliometric analysis tools in the R programming language were used in the analysis of the thematic distribution of the publications addressed to the University and the variation of this distribution over time. Accordingly, the subject distribution of the publications published in the three years before our university was chosen as a research university, based on the Web of Science subject categories, and the subject distribution of the publications in the three years after the research university was selected, were analyzed comparatively with the help of thematic distribution graphs created on the axis of centrality and density values. It has been seen that the bibliometric method applied in this study is an innovative approach that facilitates the monitoring of the periodic changes of the prominent subject clusters in the publications of our university. It is clear that the use of the same approach as an effective tool in research performance evaluation processes and in monitoring the achievement of our university's goals and objectives in line with its research priorities in the upcoming periods will add value to research management.
