Times Higher Education (THE) has been publishing Asian Universities rankings since 2013, using the same indicators as world university rankings (teaching quality, research, publications and citations, industry income, and international visibility). While 489 universities from 30 countries were evaluated in the ranking in 2020, the number of universities evaluated this year increased by 62 to 551 universities. The number of universities that managed to enter the rankings this year in Turkey increased from 34 to 43.

Hacettepe University has been included in the ranking since 2016 and shows a continuous upward trend. Hacettepe University, which was ranked 161-170 in the band in 2017, 138 in 2018, 116 in 2019, and 118 in 2020, ranked 125th in this year's THE Asian Universities ranking. Hacettepe University, which was ranked 9th in Turkey in 2017, maintained its ranking as the best state university in 2021, and ranked behind only 3 foundational universities which were Sabancı, Koç and Çankaya Universities.
