How do scientists explain earthquake lights?

The blue lights that were reported to be seen in the sky before or during the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes and finally the earthquakes in Hatay rekindled the discussions on the subject.

This is not the first time this has happened, and such claims have been constantly being brought up after the earthquakes around the world. They are among the most prominent conspiracy theories, such as UFO and HAARP. But scientists and officials emphasize that this is not true.

If it is less than 1 second and quiet, the probability of being an earthquake light is 95 percent

Although there have been scientific studies on this subject before, thanks to the cameras and recording technologies that have been increasing in recent years, it is now possible to examine more evidence.

In the January 2019 issue of the Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences (TUBITAK) in the paper by Prof. Dr. Ülkü Ulusoy and Dr. Neil Whitehead, the formation, shapes and causes of the lights were studied by examining the images obtained from the Chile, New Zealand, Romania, Peru and Van earthquakes.

Ulusoy and Whitehead state that if a light is seen while earthquake tremors continue, does not accompany any sound, has a semi-circular structure and lasts less than 1 second, it can be said that it is not a conventional light and can be classified as an earthquake light with a 95% probability.

While various claims are included in the article, conspiracy theories such as UFO and HAARP, as well as loading or explosions on power lines are discussed. In the article, which examines the glows on power lines in different places, it is revealed that earthquake lights are different from the radiations in energy transmission lines in terms of their formation, and it is emphasized that earthquake light claims go back before the invention of electricity.

In the article, which emphasized that the images confirm the existence of earthquake lights, it is stated that blue and turquoise colors are clearly seen in the video. The article also states that in the formation of this color spectrum, the blue color may be caused by ionized nitrogen, the green color by oxygen and, although rarer, the red color may be due to non-ionized nitrogen and may be in different tones depending on the distance from the nucleus of the light.
