Turkey Fifth Demographics Conference Completed

The Fifth Demographics Conference of Turkey was held face to face on 17-18 November 2022 in Ankara, in the building of the Institute of Population Studies in Hacettepe University Beytepe campus. The first was 1968; The demographic conferences, the second of which was held in 1975, the third in 1997, and the fourth in 2015, are seen as an important event in terms of understanding the population dynamics of the period and developing population policies.

Considering that migration has a significant impact on population dynamics as well as its economic, social and political effects, the main theme of the Fifth Demographics Conference was determined as "Turkey and Migration". In addition to the issues related to migration, many different topics such as fertility, family and household, old age and intergenerational relations, mortality and life expectancy, population and health policies, research methods, which are within the scope of demography, were examined at the conference.

135 researchers, 12 of whom were from abroad, attended 21 oral presentation sessions and 1 poster session within the conference.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the science of demography, in addition to demographers, a large number of academics and academics working in the fields of sociology, anthropology, economics, labor economics, urban and regional planning, statistics, geography, history, mathematics, women's studies, political science, social work, public health, and pediatrics attended the conference. The researcher showed interest.

At the opening of the conference, the conference chairman, Assoc. Dr. Mehmet Ali Eryurt, Director of the Institute of Population Studies Prof. Dr. İsmet Koç, Hacettepe University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Aydın Ulucan, United Nations Population Fund Turkey Representative Hassan Mohtashami made speeches. After the opening speeches, Al Farah Children's Choir took the stage. After the choir, Prof. Dr. İlhan Tekeli made the opening speech of the conference titled "Which Categories of Migration Can Turkey's Migration History Be Considered".

The "Fifth Demographics Conference", which was held right after the world's population reached 8 billion, is expected to serve for an effective scientific discussion of population issues and to increase interdisciplinary interaction.
