A study conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Leyla Özdemir, a faculty member at Hacettepe University Faculty of Nursing, received the Best Paper Award at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Congress.
The study was conducted as part of the doctoral dissertation project entitled “The Effects of Pursed-Lip Breathing Exercise and Laughter Therapy on Dyspnea, Health Status, and Care Dependency in Individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease,” under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Leyla Özdemir of the Department of Nursing at Hacettepe University. The study earned our graduate, Dr. Goncagül Aldan, the Best Paper Award at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Congress.
The project aimed to investigate the effects of pursed-lip breathing exercise (PLBE) and laughter therapy (LT) on the severity of dyspnea, health status, and care dependency among individuals with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The findings showed that both interventions significantly reduced the severity of dyspnea and improved health status in individuals with COPD.
The study indicated that these structured and low-cost interventions could provide valuable support as part of the routine treatment of individuals with COPD. In addition to its scientific achievement, the doctoral dissertation project also received extensive coverage in the international media.
