Situation assessment was carried out in archaeological sites in the earthquake zone

Upon the request of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a scientific committee was formed to determine the situation of archaeological excavations and ruins in Kahramanmaraş, which were adversely affected by earthquakes. The scientific committee, which included 5 academicians from 4 different universities, under the coordination of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halil Tekin, Faculty Member of the Archeology Department of our university, made extensive investigations in the provinces of Adıyaman, Diyarbakır, Kahramanmaraş, Malatya and Şanlıurfa.

In these regions, a total of 30 archaeological excavation sites and ruins, including Mount Nemrut, Göbekli Tepe and Arslantepe, which are on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list, were visited. Although there was minor damage in some archaeological areas, no significant damage was detected in general.
