Prepared by the Center for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University in the Netherlands, the CWTS Leiden Ranking provides key insights into the scientific performance of more than 1,400 universities worldwide.
Rather than using data directly from universities, the Leiden Ranking uses Web of Science data as its primary data source. Unlike other university rankings, the Leiden Ranking is entirely based on bibliographic data from scientific publications.
While 1,225 universities were evaluated in the CWTS Leiden 2022 Ranking, this number increased to 1,411 in 2023. When the number of universities included in the 2023 ranking is evaluated, China ranks first with 273 universities, and the USA ranks second with 206 universities. Last year, 32 universities from Turkey were evaluated. In 2023, this number increased to 36. Hacettepe University ranked first among universities in Turkey in 2023 as it was in 2022. On the other hand, among all universities evaluated, it ranked 410th in 2023, rising 23 places in the ranking compared to the previous year.
