Turkey's most comprehensive Biodiversity Museum opened in Hacettepe

The opening ceremony of Hacettepe University Biodiversity Museum (BIOSPHERE), where the adventures of species and genes in the biosphere will be explored and the rich biodiversity of our country is presented with the most comprehensive examples, was held in Beytepe Campus on May 22, 2023, on World Biodiversity Day.

Ankara Deputy Governor Namık Kemal Nazlı, Ankara University Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Ünüvar, Ankara Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Ali Ayvazoğlu, Ankara Chamber of Industry Chairman Seyit Ardıç, Tagem General Manager Dr. Metin Türker, Hacettepe University management, staff and many students attended the ceremony.

The program, which started with a concert by the students of Hacettepe University Ankara State Conservatory, Music and Performing Arts High School, copper wind instrument department, continued with the opening speech of Biological Diversity Research and Application Center Director Prof. Dr. Selim Sualp Çağlar. Selim Sualp Çağlar said, “Today, we are inaugurating the Biodiversity Museum, which was established within the scope of the Nature Conservation and Biodiversity Education Research Center project, which started at the beginning of 2009. Our museum has emerged as a very comprehensive project proposal that includes many stakeholders when it was completed considering the needs of our country on biological diversity and national and international needs.” said. Stating that the aim of the project is to create a reference center that offers research, protection, education and exhibition activities for the natural biodiversity of our country, Çağlar said, “Basically, within the framework of the project; It is aimed to include a botanical park, greenhouses, ponds and aquariums, a research center and a gene bank. A comprehensive infrastructure will be provided for national and international researchers to study Turkey's biological diversity. It is also our main goal to organize theoretical and applied education programs, including museums and exhibition halls, where everyone can participate, in which the fun side of science will be recognized by increasing the interest in biological diversity, especially for children.

Rector of our University Prof. Dr. Mehmet Cahit Güran thanked everyone who contributed to the preparation of the museum in his opening speech: “I would like to express my gratitude to all of you for your participation in the opening of the Biodiversity Museum, which was established within the Hacettepe University Biodiversity Advanced Research Center on this meaningful day, which is May 22, World Biodiversity Day. On this meaningful day, we are very happy to open such a museum, a museum that deals with the issue of biodiversity. We believe that the museum, which is a reference center, will have an important function in fulfilling the requirements of both our national laws and international agreements to which we are a party, depending on the main objectives of researching, defining and protecting Turkey's extraordinary biodiversity potential, and educating all segments of the society on this subject"
