The "100 Japanese Designs Exhibition from Past to Present", organized by the Embassy of Japan and the Japan Promotion Foundation in cooperation with our university, was opened with a ceremony at Hacettepe University Art Museum on March 11. In addition to Japan's Ambassador to Ankara, Takahiko Katsumata, representatives from 17 countries' embassies and Hacettepe University's management, academic and administrative staff attended the opening ceremony.
Speaking at the opening, Japan Ambassador Takahiko Katsumata said, “This exhibition, which travels around the world, presents you approximately 100 products, most of which were produced after 2000, together with masterpieces that have become the source of contemporary design. From product design to system and service design, various designs that support our daily lives reflect people's lifestyles and society. For example, since Japan has long suffered from earthquakes, there are designs that reflect various creative ideas for disaster prevention and mitigation. In particular, products related to the water circulation hand washing stand 'Wosh' were brought by Japanese emergency aid teams and used in the disaster area following the earthquakes in southeastern Turkey last year. "In addition, since Japan's creative designs in the field of healthcare will be introduced in the "Health and Medical" section of the exhibition, I think it will attract the attention of medical experts in Hacettepe," he said.
Reminding that 2024 is the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Turkey, Katsumata said, "Many cultural events promoting Japan are held throughout Turkey throughout the year. This exhibition is one of them."
Rector of our university Prof. Dr. Mehmet Cahit Güran also made a speech at the ceremony and stated that Japan opened its first embassy in the world in Turkey and that there are deep ties between Turkey and Japan. Our Rector Güran pointed out that these relations have continued to increase for 100 years and said:
“This exhibition is part of a series of events held in Turkey on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Turkey in 2024. The exhibition includes industrial works designed after 2000. It is an exhibition that tries to bring design to the agenda and presents these to our attention with its design dimension. Maybe you can produce many things in the world today; But if you cannot make them demandable, if you cannot create a result that will make people want to consume them and benefit from these products in the most effective way when they buy them, the knowledge and technology you produce has no meaning. Therefore, it is a very valuable exhibition in terms of bringing the issue of design to our agenda."
The "100 Japanese Designs from Past to Present" exhibition will be open to visitors at the Hacettepe University Art Museum located on the Sıhhiye Campus until April 22, between 10.00-16.00, except Saturdays and Sundays.
