The groundbreaking ceremony for the Hacettepe University Multidisciplinary Research Center Building, which will provide service within our university, was held. Our Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Cahit Güran, Vice Rectors, university administrators, academic and administrative personnel, and contractor company managers and employees attended the ceremony.
Our Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Cahit Güran, who made the opening speech of the ceremony, started his speech by stating that our university had no unresolved problems and gave this project as an example, saying, “The fruits of the steps we have taken are slowly emerging.”
Prof. Dr. Güran said that such projects would be new gains for our university regarding the Multidisciplinary Research Center Building; Hacettepe would continue to contribute to our country and world science with healthy and strong infrastructures that are more compatible with the general profile of our university.
Sharing information about the previous adventure of the newly opened building, Prof. Dr. Güran said, “When you look at the building, we see that it continues its existence as a building that does not qualify as an advanced research laboratory. When we thought about how we could make it more qualified, we decided that a new project should be developed to increase the capacity of this place, which is a research university, and to make the building more qualified,” he said.
Our Rector Güran continued his speech as follows:
“This building will be transformed into a 15 thousand square meter structure consisting of 3 separate units. The first unit is the existing HÜNİTEK building with an area of 6000 square meters, and the other two units consist of two blocks with an area of approximately 9000 square meters, the foundations of which we are currently laying. When the entire building and laboratory infrastructure are completed, an investment of approximately 600 million TL will have been made. This project is not only a building project, but also a project that may have results regarding the management of research. In this research building, an opportunity will be created where basic science researchers in the field of health sciences and researchers working in the fields of science and engineering sciences can work together. On the other hand, this building will have an infrastructure where not only researchers working in our organization but also our doctoral and graduate students, students with good projects, researchers coming from abroad and domestically can work.
This center, which is a project designed according to the needs of the devices and planned by using various laboratories and equipment that researchers from different disciplines can use, will have seminar, conference, workshop and meeting halls, amphitheater-type conference halls, various office and foyer areas, and social activity areas. The project will also include a Transgenic Animal Laboratory and spaces where live experimental animals will be located, as well as some infrastructure and technology.
The building has many technical details. When it is finally completed, BSL 2 and BSL 3 type laboratories will also be established where high-security virus and bacterial species can be worked on. We plan for this building to have an important infrastructure in terms of vaccine studies. We aim to complete the project within 2 years. Hopefully, when that day comes, we will open it together.
As a university, we need to continue to develop our research infrastructure from now on, and manage it in a planned, high-quality and sustainable manner. I hope this project will lead to works that contribute to both science and sectoral production.”
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Cahit Güran said that there will be a similar building in the Sıhhiye Campus and said, “There will be a Clinical Research Center building in our Sıhhiye Campus. Clinicians, physicians, audiologists, physiotherapists and pharmacists will work together there. In this way, we will build a research and production structure together.”
Our Rector Güran thanked everyone who contributed to the project processes, especially the Presidency of Strategy and Budget, the HÜNİTEK team that contributed to the project phase, the Nanomedicine and Bioengineering Departments, the Construction Department managers and engineers, the contractor company, and the project process, and concluded his speech.
Then, the ceremony was completed by pouring the first mortar on the foundation of the Multidisciplinary Research Center Building.
