The Preliminary Report Meeting for the TNSA-2024 Project, conducted under the management and coordination of the Institute of Population Studies and in collaboration with the Presidency of Strategy and Budget (SBB) of the Republic of Turkey as part of the TÜBİTAK 1007 KAMAG Programme, was held on 8 April 2026 in the Conference Hall of the Institute of Population Studies.

The meeting was attended by representatives from the SBB, the Ministry of Family and Social Services, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of National Education, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the Revenue Administration (GİB), the Turkish Science and Technology Research Council (TÜSEB) and TÜBİTAK. At the opening of the preliminary report meeting, our Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Şahap Armağan Tarım, Dr Hande Hacımahmutoğlu, Deputy Director General for Sectors and Public Investments at the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey’s Strategy and Budget Presidency, and Institute Director Prof. Dr. İsmet Koç delivered speeches.

In his speech, Prof. Dr. Tarım emphasised that the series of demographic studies, representing 58 years of uninterrupted demographic data since 1968, holds unique significance not only for our country but also on a global scale, noting that these studies form part of Turkey’s Official Statistics Programme. Prof. Dr. Tarım stated that the data obtained from this research guides evidence-based decision-making in numerous critical processes, ranging from development plans and strategy documents to budget and personnel planning and the identification of priority areas. He also noted that there is significant demand for this data from international organisations and expressed his gratitude to all the institutions and organisations involved.

In his speech, Dr Hacımahmutoğlu noted that the Turkey Demographic and Health Surveys provide evidence-based contributions to family and population policies and strategies in Turkey, emphasising that much of the data obtained from these surveys cannot be sourced from any other source in Turkey. Dr Hacımahmutoğlu noted that SBB, the project’s client organisation, would make extensive use of the project’s findings during the preparation and implementation of development programmes, and expressed his gratitude to the researchers involved in the project.
Following the opening speeches, the presentation of the TNSA-2024 results commenced. In this context, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Melike Saraç presented the research methodology; Prof. Dr. İsmet Koç presented the results regarding the Turkish sample; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Abbasoğlu Özgören presented the results of the Syrian Migrant Sample. The session then moved on to a question-and-answer session, during which participants’ questions were answered and their views and suggestions were noted.

In the next phase of the TNSA-2024 project, which began on 20 December 2024 and will run for 36 months, data analyses will be conducted, and the main reports, along with the advanced analysis report and the trend analysis report, will be drafted.
